I Lost My Passion for Fashion

Well put, @missanalvomit … as an alumni of Fashion Design, I totally agree, and am also facing $65k in student loan debt. Only thing I can say is to stay strong, (try) to stay positive, and don’t let your passion for fashion die. If WE don’t care enough to love fashion, who else will? xo – nic

Missanalvomit

A very bold statement, but slightly true. More than fifty-thousand dollars in debt, living in a city where the fashion jobs are scarce, and plenty of con artists; at some point motivation becomes depleted. Not an odd feeling of course, every post-grad or alumni has felt the sour note of realty. The ‘Art of fashion‘ adrift is the most irking. The simple fact an institute I’ve attended is mentioned in articles pertaining to shut downs and fraudulence, is troublesome. Contemplating about it is very frustrating and something to learn from.

Reading Op-Ed | Fashion Schools Should Focus on Creativity was rambling my mind, I felt compelled to express concur for the article.   Overpriced fashion school programs, repetitive brand looks, lack of respect in the industry, and social media obsession is diminishing the artistic value fashion contributes to culture. This is the surface, by no means this applies to all…

Styling The City

I have been working on an idea for a project. The project involves taking an airstream, gutting it, and renovating it to become a mobile boutique / styling center. I started a “gofundme” account in hopes that people from the community will donate to the cause. Since starting the account, I have seen friends post things about how ” millennial expect everything to come for free” and “you need to work hard to get what you want, not just ask for it.” Although I completely agree with those statements, I don’t believe that those ideas apply in this circumstance. This project is about giving back to the community (once it’s finished) in a way that only few people might understand. Styling someone may seem like an easy job to some, but I feel like it is more than a job. It is an investment in a person, and their self-esteem, to figure out what makes them feel great, and how I can help them feel that way everyday. I want to give the community a breath of fresh air, a little boost of confidence, and create a lasting relationship.
HERE IS THE LINK to the “gofundme” account. If you feel like this is something that interests or moves you, please donate to the project, or share the link. Thank you in advance.

waiting game (+ random shit)

I had an interview yesterday for a job that I really would LOVE. There is only one stipulation. Because the job entails re-sale of clothing, and BurntNic also has re-sale, they said I would have to cease selling my stuff on my site. Hmm. I, of course, told them yes I will stop. But, it’s kind of sad. I will just have to push styling and shopping consultations for BurntNic, instead of resale buying wholesale. . .
That is, IF, I get the job. I am awaiting their response, and I REALLY hope it’s a good one, because my last day as a server at Bocho sushi is on Friday. FRIYAY !
Here is a mid-week upload of some random shit that I think is amazing.

First, this girl, Katie Moore. Like, LOVE the red hair, and the fact that she is styled so perfectly in color juxtaposition to her hair. SPOT ON.

But, you get the idea. Misfits tees, plaid chiffon (or silk) double and triple layered skirts, LEATHER JACKETS, and spikes. It’s basically my portfolio designs from when I was in college. I just super duper LOVE this collection by R13.

Next, I just had to share these cute little sunnies by MIU MIU. I want.

Last, (but not least at all) these cute gals with the giant fro’s. Ashish put on an excellent show in London, and every outfit was paired with a glittery glam afro wig to match. I wish I could grow locks like this !!
Anyway, I hope I get the job. If not, it was for a reason. HAPPY HUMPDAY, peeps.

Slaying in Stella

Screen Shot 2016-03-09 at 8.35.20 AM

The puffer coats, the metallics, the luxury, oh my! The Stella McCartney Fall 2016 RTW Collection was absolutely stunning with its variety of textiles and colors. She features puffer coats in copper, black, and this deep, midnight blue. The oversized coats complimented the metallic culottes and sleek hair. Some models rocked one earring, some rocked none, but they all SLAYED. There was a definite 40’s influence in the styling and some of the garments, like the silk slip maxi dress with lace cut-outs and knife pleats, as well as the side-swept hair with soft waves.
One of the highlights (in my opinion) was the swan graphic that appeared on a few pieces. I feel it added elements of whimsy and playfulness to the collection. The velvet garments, though, were the icing on the cake, because who wouldn’t want a giant oversized puffer coat in a velvet blue? (It would be like wearing a cloud, right?)
A touch of denim, a touch of femininity, some tennis shoes, and a few (on-trend) color pops made for an eye-catching and signature “Stella” show.

can we PLEASE talk about VETEMENTS !?!

First of all, I think it is SO badass that the stylist for Vetements has walked in their own shows twice? Wait, let me re-phrase that… (or, re-write that). The stylist herself, Lotta Volkova is a BADASS. The whole show was badass. How many times can I put badass in this post? Luckily, the pictures can do most of the talking. Below is the badass mastermind that is “making bad taste look so good” [vogue].

Highlights from the show would be the HOODIE MAXI skirts and dresses, velvet, profane graphics and sayings, plaid, chains, and random hoops on belt loops (to hang your coat on while you are not wearing it, of course). The over-sized shoulders were something to be noted, a nod to the 80’s, even though Lotta said her inspiration comes from the 90’s and growing up in Russia and Europe. I love the feeling of the young-meets-old, the androgyny, and the overall IDGAF vibe of the collection. Had to post this up before I went to work today, because it was SO FUCKING BADASS.

application processed

“Thank you! Your application is being processed. If you are a qualified candidate, we will get back to you regarding this position.” This is the email I have been receiving at least 2 or 3 times a day for the past 20 days. I am not exaggerating. I have been applying for jobs for almost a month straight and no call backs or emails. “Is something wrong with my resume? Should I take my serving job off of my work history? Or my BurntNic founder title?.. But, I don’t want employers to think that I have been un-employed for the last 6 months.”… These are the thoughts that have come up in the last few weeks that make me question my job-seeking abilities. I have never NOT gotten a job after applying for more than 5 or so. (I know it’s a double negative, but I like how it sounds in my head.)
Assuredly, I will stay positive, with confidence in my resume, because I know my work history better than anyone. I know I can do this !

A pic of a badass girl.. this is how I imagine myself taking on a new, amazing career.

whippin’ into shape

I fell off the tracks, got so stressed, and neglected my blog and my website for months. Now it’s time to get back into it, and whip my ass into shape. I already started off the new year right by quitting drinking and smoking at the end of January. It’s been over a month now, and since doing this as well as working out, losing (a little) unwanted holiday weight, I feel like it is finally time to update the website.
I have to plan a photo shoot first, though, and my go-to model has kicked off her career and has been working in Milan and London for the past month and a half. (Lucky!) So, I will patiently wait for her, and brainstorm the next shoot. I want to give myself (and the amazing people I will work with on this) enough time to plan because I secretly hope to have hair and make-up help too. I have felt this desperate need to market my re-sale items in a cool way that shows off the appeal or versatility, and one day last week it hit me, “Why wouldn’t I style all of the re-sale items together in an awesome shot, and then market them separately? DUH!!” Needless to say,  the website will be getting a face-lift soon via my outrageous amount of inspiration.
I think that something new inspires us every single day. If I can try to keep up with it, I want to post something that inspires me on a daily basis. Maybe weekly. We’ll see how this goes. Every morning for the past few weeks, I wake up early (6:30 or 7am is early AF for me) and I go jogging. I come home, start the coffee pot, and take a shower. Then, I get on my laptop and check emails, apply for new and relevant jobs in my field of study, and I also check twitter and email updates on the latest beauty products and fashion shows. Since all of the recent “Fashion Weeks”, I have accumulated a lot of screenshots of inspiring outfits and such. I’ve included some of the “ALEXANDER MCQUEEN” and “MOSCHINO” [FALL16 RTW] inspiration screen shots below. Enjoy!
